Tracing back to the 18th   & 19th century of the French Impressionists, and forward to the California Impressionists of the 20th century, artists have yearned to develop a deeper understanding of nature through close observation, recording the effects of the changing light on the landscape.

Artists discovered that the presence of natural light outside revealed color & luminosity never before witnessed in the studio.  This discovery created excitement to capture the ever-changing elements of light, atmosphere, color, & weather.

In 1841, when paints could be inserted into tubes & carried outside, a new visual vocabulary was developed and a love for painting outdoors developed. Painting onsite requires quick observation and brush-work, thus creating a “fresh and exciting” painting.

Farmington is the perfect place to observe nature in both formal and informal settings and we’re open to the public throughout the day, allowing you to capture the atmosphere and light of a particular spot at a variety of times.

Plein Air painting at Farmington will be taught by artist Catherine Bryant.  The beginning class will allow new students to receive hands on attention while more seasoned painters can take advantage of the six-week course to hone their work over a longer period of time.
