This is an invitation to you to join a discussion of the book James: A Novel by Percival Everett.
The staff, volunteers, and board members are always trying to extend Farmington’s community engagement. One of the ways we have done this is to join a group called the Louisville Coalition on the History of Enslavement (LCHE). The LCHE is supported by four historic properties here in Jefferson County: Oxmoor, Locust Grove, Riverside, and Farmington. The enslavement of humans provided the primary labor force in the pre-Civil War days at each of those locations.
The LCHE was created to support the efforts at these four sites as they work to tell a complete and transparent history about all of the people who lived there.
One of the main things that the LCHE does is support an annual Book Discussion Series. The first of these discussions will focus on James: A Novel by Percival Everatt and will be held at Oxmoor Farm at 6:00 this Tuesday, March 6th.
Other discussions include:
- Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghosts: Stories and Recipes from Five Generations of Black Country Cooks by Crystal Wilkinson. This will be held at 6:00 May 15th at Locust Grove.
- Cecilia and Fanny: The Remarkable Friendship Between an Escaped Slave and her Former Mistress by Brad Asher. This discussion is at 6:00, July 17th at Farmington.
- Night Flyer: Harriet Tubman and the Faith Dreams of a Free People by Tiya Miles and Henry Louis Gates, Jr. This will be at 6:00, October 9 at Riverside.
These discussions are always interesting and the LCHE has chosen books that are well worth reading. If you have time please come to any (or all) of these events.
My best to all of yours,
David
